Teaching Trip to Africa

The work day at the mission begins at 7:00 each morning with a devotional attended by Lendal and the Malawian mission employees.
The first big event during my visit was a two-day meeting of preachers and church leaders from Southern Malawi and Mozambique, a number of whom I had known from previous years. I did some teaching and other time was given to reporting, teaching and discussion by the Malawian leaders. As often happens when a representative from the sponsors in America visits, some of the brothers called for American financial support for Malawian preachers. I am sure it was not what they wanted to hear, but I talked with them carefully about the Biblical and practical reasons why we have always had a policy not to do for the preachers what the Malawian church is responsible to do. We have always tried to follow a path that would not retard the growth of the local churches into maturity and self-support. By God's grace, though the topic was emotional, the brothers had a good spirit when the discussion was over.
I felt very at home in this building. I drew the plans for it and helped put the roof on it in 1965. Sitting on the backless, hard benches, becomes a challenge as time passes.
During the meeting Brother Jones Solomon, once a young student in my Bible courses and now doing mission outreach in neighboring Mozambique, gave a report on his work..
About 100 preachers and leaders attended this meeting. It was very good to see some old fellow-laborers in God's work. But many whom I worked with have gone on to be with Christ.
