My first Sunday in Malawi, I worshiped with the congregation on the mission. They have an early English language service, then a service in Chichewa. I spoke at both services. After a few days in Malawi using the language, my Chichewa came flooding back. |

The song leader opened the service.

The offering that day included not only money but produce such as corn, seen here. Someone offered a pigeon and sent it to the front in the hands of a young child. The pigeon got away, flew out the church door, and had to be caught after church by the deacons. |

One of the leaders wrote on the board the total of the
contributions that day.

Rodrick Maluwa, a fine young Malawian, is the regular preacher for the mission congregation, and has just been hired to join the mission office staff. He is seen here with his wife and one of his children. Back in the 70's, when Rodrick was just a schoolboy, a missionary couple, Jack and Evelyn Hutton, hired him to do yard work for them. He was a little older than my oldest son, Ian. He and Ian became close friends. Later when Ian did a missionary tour in Malawi, he gave much attention to discipling Rodrick, who is now a promising leader among the younger generation. I was pleased to find that the new generation of Malawian church leaders is much more confident. The old generation tended to feel they could not do anything without leaning on missionary help. |

Brother Chitsulo, another mission staffer, brought his
two young sons to church. He is very proud of them.

Also at church I met Chiwanda Masuku, who served as foreman of our outdoor employees during the years I was at the mission. He is now an elderly man. It was a pleasure to see him. His greeting in the morning was always, "Mtendere," meaning "Peace." |

On our way to a Sunday evening devotional, we encountered
these children belonging to some of the mission staff.
