Nuggets 19: The Preacher and the Temptress
Godwin Makwakwa (mah-KWAH-kwah) was a legendary preacher in Malawi, Africa. I knew him during the years Ruth and I lived there. His ministry was all the more remarkable because he was totally blind. He had a Braille Bible. Someone found him a 2-seater bicycle. Brother Makwakwa would get on the back seat and a sighted brother would steer from the front seat as they both pedaled toward some village where they would share Jesus.
Once Brother Makwakwa attended a weekend camp meeting where believers gathered from many surrounding churches. At night the visiting preachers were given space in a neighboring house to spread their sleeping mats on the floor. At some point during the night Brother Makwakwa awakened with a sense that there was someone near him. Since blind people "see" with their hands, Makwakwa put his hands out and encountered body beads, the kind Malawian women wear for sexual attraction. He instantly realized that a woman had slipped into the sleeping area for the wrong reasons. A delicate situation for a preacher or any sincere believer! Immediately Makwakwa sat straight up and called out to the sleepers around him, "Brothers, let us pray!" The woman made a hasty retreat.
Things might have turned out differently if Godwin Makwakwa had not known who he was and whose he was. Like Joseph in Potiphar's household, Makwakwa had made up his mind long before about how he would act in such circumstances. In today's world we cannot remain faithful to Christ if we do not know clearly, as he did, who we are and whose we are.
