Cultivating Peace in a Chaotic World: Nervous System, Faith, and Formation

This course explores peace not as withdrawal from chaos, but as a form of faithful presence within it. Drawing from Christian theology, attachment theory, neuroscience, and pastoral psychology, students will examine why peace is often inaccessible in anxious cultural and ecclesial contexts—and how it can be cultivated bodily, relationally, and spiritually. Emphasis is placed on embodied practices that support nervous system regulation, theological reflection that resists fear-based faith, and pastoral discernment that allows us to remain grounded amid uncertainty, conflict, and change. Students will engage both conceptually and experientially, practicing peace from the outset while developing a deeper understanding of its foundations.
